Calvin W., 75, Elmira, NY
/in Fulfilled Wishes/by Michelle BowrenA wonderful donation from The Becket Family Foundation sent Calvin and his wife on their trip to Daytona, Florida. They had a wonderful and relaxing time thanks to their generosity!
Calvin is 75 years old and lives in Elmira, NY with his wife. A double amputee and problems with his intestines due to Peripheral Arterial Disease,(P.A.D.), he remains an active member of his church, sings in the choir, and still helps with the cooking and housework in his home. Calvin spent his life working 6-7 days a week at two jobs to make ends meet. After losing his legs, the hardships followed, including 14 operations and loss of all income except his monthly social security allowance. Described as a man of wisdom and kindness, Calvin seeks to pray, comfort and encourage all those who surround him, whether they are his roommates and health care workers in the hospital or when people come to his home to visit and pray for him. His positivism and outlook on life make people feel good about themselves!
Calvin’s wish is to fly on a plane for the first time in his life and head to Daytona Beach. Calvin will now fly the blue skies, enjoy the sound of the waves, spend time on the sandy shore with the help of a beach wheelchair and relax for the first time in a long time!
Up, Up and Away!!
/in Fulfilled Wishes/by Mary FarrellMiriam Krause, a resident of St. Martha Manor in Downingtown, Pa., celebrated her 100th birthday by having her wish to ride in a hot air balloon granted. Miriam, who turned 100 on September 10, 2012, always wanted to ride in a hot air balloon but never had the chance. She was adventurous from a young age. In fact, after Miriam saw an acrobat on the trapeze at the circus, her family built one for her in their backyard! Her wish was granted on September 11th, thanks to donor Mary Forkin. The big, beautiful red balloon took off at 6 a.m. with Miriam, her children, and grandchildren. Although it was chilly, Miriam loved every minute, commenting that the “trees looked like parsley!”

Residents from Gloria Dei and Twilight Wish representatives visited St. John Neumann Place and distributed the gifts during a special ceremony on Wednesday, August 8, 2012. Before the ceremony, the guests were treated to a homemade luncheon, courtesy of the residents of St. John Neumann.
Florence T., 91, Doylestown, PA
/in Fulfilled Wishes/by Mary FarrellFlorence Thompson, 91, had her wish for hearing aids granted in August 2012, thanks to Twilight Wish and Dr. Patrick Murphy of Doylestown, PA. Florence is deaf in her right ear and was gradually losing hearing in her left ear, making it difficult for her to communicate and socialize with others in her senior housing facility. She is also legally blind and listens to books on CD; her new hearing aids enable her to hear her books more clearly. Because of her limited income, she was unable to purchase hearing aids on her own. Thanks to the generosity of a donor and to Dr. Murphy who discounted the hearing aids, Florence’s quality of life is greatly improved!
Karen H., 69, Tucson, AZ
/in Fulfilled Wishes/by Mary FarrellKaren Havel, 69, had her wish to travel to Alaska to visit family she hasn’t seen in years granted on June 12, 2012. Despite the long distance between them, Karen and her aunt have stayed in close contact through the years via phone calls, letters, and cards. Throughout her life, Karen always took care of others, including her mother and husband who both passed away from cancer. Tragically, her only daughter was severely injured in a car accident, leaving her a quadriplegic. Karen moved her daughter from their home in Wisconsin to Tucson as the cold weather was detrimental to her daughter’s health. Until her daughter’s death three years ago, Karen was at her side in the nursing facility for hours every day.
Because of her financial situation and own health problems, it was impossible for Karen to make the trip to Alaska to see her beloved aunt and cousins on her own. Thanks to the Arizona chapter of Twilight Wish, Karen’s wish finally came true! She was able to fly to Alaska and spend two weeks with her family there.

She also volunteers in her community at Pima Counseling on Aging and in her church. Her wish to travel to California and see lighthouses came true on May 14, 2012 when she and companion, Wendy Reuter, traveled to California and toured the Point Montara and Pigeon Point lighthouses.
