/in Fulfilled Wishes/by Mary FarrellThe Long Island, NY chapter of Twilight Wish Foundation recently granted a wish for 91-year-old Alice Wengertner. A mother of five children, Wengertner was widowed at a young age when her husband died at the age of only 42. Wengertner worked three jobs to support her young children. Now 91, she lives alone and suffers from macular degeneration, leaving her unable to see her small screen television. Her neighbor submitted the wish application on her behalf, writing “Alice is a wonderful person and so deserving. Because she is alone at night, it would be wonderful for her to have a television that she can actually see.” Thanks to LINY chapter director, James Ciervo who raised the money to buy the television through a raffle, her wish was granted on May 12, 2012 when she received her new large screen television.

Marilyn is the widow of a pastor and lives on a fixed income. She wishes to visit her only brother in Indiana but cannot afford to travel on her own. She hasn’t seen him in many years. He is ill and is not able to come visit her. We raised $450 to cover the cost of her flight. She had a wonderful visit with him and is very grateful for the donors who made this happen!

/in Fulfilled Wishes/by Mary FarrellCornada Bowling, a resident of Hillside Villa Care & Rehabilitation Center in Madisonville, KY had her Twilight Wish to ride a motorcycle and eat hot wings granted, thanks to a partnership between Twilight Wish and the operator of the nursing center, SunBridge Healthcare.
Cornada has been a resident of Hillside Villa for more than two years. According to the staff there, despite her age, Cornada is still full of life and says exactly what she thinks, earning her the nickname “Sassy.” Her one regret is that she feels as though she was never daring or surprised her family in any way. Her wish to ride in a motorcycle sidecar and go to the local Applebee’s for hot wings and beer was granted on Saturday, May 12, 2012. Special thanks to the River City Hog Chapter #1210 and members Sherry and Rick Dile of Evansville who made the trip to Madisonville to give Cornada her ride of a lifetime! Frederick is an amputee who uses a scooter to move around his house. He unfortunately has fallen many times trying to get out of his chair and into his scooter. He is in need of a lift chair to make his daily life safer. He always helped his neighbors and friends before he became ill. He helped repair bicycles and toys for a local preschool and fixed many items for his neighbors whenever they asked. Grandmother to eight and great-grandmother to twelve, Doris was “thunderstruck the first time I heard him sing and saw him perform. That was 1964 and I still feel the same way every time I listen to him sing and see his picture. To meet him in person would be the crowning glory of my life.” Thanks to Sunny Hilden who helped orchestrate this wish, Doris spent Friday, April 13th with Merle Haggard before his show at the Belterra Casino in Florence, IN. Doris and her friend were backstage with Merle all afternoon, listened to the sound check and saw him perform from nearly front row seats! Doris, who just celebrated her 75th birthday, said “Even though I just turned 75, I feel like I’m 18 again!” Pictured, Merle Haggard with Doris Ward.
Bill S., 85, Newark, DE
/in Fulfilled Wishes/by Mary FarrellWilliam “Bill” Schaen joined the Navy in 1943 during World War II and retired in December of 1962. He served as a sonar technician on five different vessels during that time. After retiring from the Navy, he worked in the naval sound laboratory in Connecticut for 20 years. Schaen, who will turn 86 on April 26th, is still active in VFW Post 475 in Delaware and continues to serve as Quartermaster there. His wish to stand on the deck of a destroyer like he did during the war was granted, thanks to the amazing crew of the USS Mahan in Norfolk, VA on April 10, 2012. The crew went above and beyond in granting Schaen’s wish, giving him a full tour of the destroyer including the sonar room and sharing lunch with the Chiefs in the CPO dining space. The crew also presented him with a birthday cake and a framed picture of the Mahan, signed by the crew.
