Lillian M, 95, Phoenixville, PA
/in Open Wishes/by Cheryl GustafsonLillian, a 95-year-old senior from Phoenixville, PA is a big baseball fan. She follows the Phillies, all of the players, and knows who they are playing, trading, or is injured. She keeps up with the bi-monthly Monday morning sports desk program. The Senior Center took a trip to the Reading Phillies last year. Lillian was the ringleader and encouraged others to attend. They have already planned a trip for this year in May, but unfortunately the transportation cost has more than tripled. Lillian’s Twilight Wish is to be able to get the transportation cost covered for her and her peers to be able to attend the game at the beginning of May. When Lillian found out that she had been nominated for a Twilight Wish she got tears in her eyes and was bursting with excitement. We are looking to raise $1420.00 for bus transportation. /in Open Wishes/by Cheryl GustafsonJohn C. is a 75-year-old resident of Glassboro, New Jersey. He is a Vietnam Veteran who is in the late stages of COPD. Because of this, he struggles to manage stairs and relies on a walker to get around. His wife, Betsy, is a former RN and his full-time caregiver also struggles to get around. His Twilight Wish is to have a ramp installed at his home to enable to get him to his car safely using his walker, improving the quality of life for both he and his wife.
John C. was nominated by Laura Palmer, his friend and author who wrote “Shrapnel in the Heart, Letters and Remembrances from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial” which traces people who left letters to those killed in Vietnam at the memorial in DC. Palmer interviewed him about the letter he left to his buddy, Eddie Van Every who was killed in action. He offered to help her find people and became her researcher for the book. John C. was then inspired to write and publish his own book, “They Were Ours” which traces many of the Veterans from Gloucester County who served in Vietnam and other wars. In his younger years when he was in better health, he volunteered at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and was a leader in his church. He also addressed groups at the National Constitution Center and has addressed countless other groups since “They Were Ours” was published.
