Frederick’s wish to have a book signing is granted

Frederick George, a resident of Torrington, Connecticut, had his wish for a book signing granted, thanks to our Connecticut chapter. George, 90, has end-stage renal disease and requires daily dialysis. His beloved wife, Joan, passed away in 2021. With the help of his daughter, he wrote a book about their love story online and they printed copies of it. George is very proud of My Life Story and wishes to have a book signing so that he can share how special his wife was with others. He served in the Army and worked hard his whole life to provide for his family of four daughters. George was also very involved in his community and has been a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Torrington for over 75 years. He also volunteered with FISH for years, making food and distributing holiday meals. His wish for a book signing was granted on Saturday, November 4, 2023.

Chylene has her wish to go to her high school reunion granted

Chylene Pender, a resident of Hartford, Connecticut, had her wish to attend her high school reunion and visit her hometown one more time granted, thanks to our Connecticut chapter. Pender, 78, had her 60th high school reunion in her hometown of Clay Center, Kansas in late September, but could not afford the cost of travel on her own limited income. She has limited mobility so could not travel on her own either. Thanks to the Connecticut chapter, Pender and her grandson flew out to Kansas and stayed for the weekend to enjoy her reunion festivities. This trip also gave her the chance to visit her parents’ and grandparents’ graves one more time. Pender has been very involved in the community throughout her life. She is currently the Vice President of the GFWC Newington/Wethersfield Woman’s Club and has held various other positions, helping with nearly every fundraiser they have had. In addition, Pender ran the gift shop at Cedarcrest Hospital for eight years prior to its closing. She also volunteered as President of St. Mary’s in Newington for 19 years. She and her grandson flew out September 29th and spent the weekend in Clay Center. Connecticut chapter director, Andrea Hoisl, honored Pender with a wish granting celebration at The Retreat on Tuesday, September 26th.

Erwin’s wish to visit his hometown one more time is granted

Erwin Williams, a resident of Rocky Hill, Connecticut, recently had his chance to visit his hometown and spend time with his high school friend one more time granted, thanks to our Connecticut chapter. Williams, 65, has several medical issues. He has not been back to his hometown of Tunbridge, Vermont in many years. He wished to visit his mother’s gravesite and also spend time with his best friend of over 60 years ago.

Hartford seniors are treated to Hartford YardGoats game

Thirty seniors from the Hartford area were treated to a Hartford Yard Goats game, thanks to our Connecticut chapter and NBC CT/Telemundo. The seniors all had a great day! One senior threw out the first pitch and another sang “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the seventh inning stretch.

Marlene’s wish for a lobster dinner to share with her husband is granted!

Marlene Keefe, a resident of Amston, Connecticut, had her wish for a lobster dinner for her and her husband in their home granted, thanks to our Connecticut chapter. Keefe, 86, was a school bus driver for over 25 years and was loved by all the children she drove. Since her retirement, she spends her time knitting blankets for her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Since the pandemic, it has become more difficult for she and her husband to dine out. Having her wish granted made her day!

Charles S., 80, Manchester, CT

Charles Sabia, 80, a resident of Manchester, Connecticut, had his wish for transportation to his granddaughter’s graduation party granted, thanks to our Connecticut chapter. Sabia is on oxygen 24/7 which makes it difficult for him to travel long distances. They have a very close-knit family, but his illness makes it difficult for them to get together.

Frank T., 101, Orange, CT

August 16, 2023/in Fulfilled Twilight Wishes

Frank Tagliatela, a resident of Orange, Connecticut, had his wish to go to the casino for his 101st birthday granted, thanks to our Connecticut chapter. Tagliatela is a WWII veteran who manned anti-aircraft artillery during the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. He turned 101 on June 3rd and wished to celebrate by visiting a casino one more time. Tagliatela attends the adult day care program at Clelian Center and was nominated for this wish by the financial director there. He was driven by his sons to the Mohegan Sun Casino where they enjoyed lunch at Tuscany Restaurant and then played some slots.

Barnum House Residents, Bridgeport, CT

July 11, 2023/in Fulfilled Twilight Wishes

Residents of low-income senior housing Barnum Housing in Bridgeport, Connecticut had their wish for a ferry ride granted, thanks to our Connecticut chapter. Many of the residents only leave their apartments for errands or doctor appointments so being treated to a trip on the water was a nice treat for them. They took the ferry from Bridgeport to Port Jefferson, New York and back, enjoying lunch on the trip. Thank you to the Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Ferry for discounting the tickets for the seniors!

Charles G. is a 83-year-old Air Force veteran from the Vietnam era, who was a POW/MIA for 18 months. Unfortunately, his world changed when he was told he needs to rely on supplemental oxygen support to survive. He has adjusted to life inside his home, but unfortunately, has been limited with time outside of the home due to the bulkiness and weight of the tanks. His Twilight Wish is to get a portable oxygen machine to be able to enjoy time with his family outdoors. To make this wish come true, we need to raise $2,800 to cover his costs. Please donate today!

St. Joseph Living Center, Windham, CT

May 18, 2023/in Fulfilled Twilight Wishes

The senior residents of St. Joseph Living Center enjoyed a visit from The Farm to Heart Petting Zoo, thanks to our Connecticut chapter. Many of the residents of this facility are retired or sick nuns who have taken a vow of poverty. Throughout their lives, they dedicated themselves to educating children and working in hospitals, food pantries and homeless shelters. As part of National Skilled Nursing Care Week, the petting zoo brought baby animals to the facility for the residents to hold and pet outside on the facility grounds. In addition, there was an ice cream sundae bar set up so that the residents could enjoy ice cream sundaes after they interacted with the animals.
