Twilight Wish Helps Local Woman Maintain Her Independence
/in Top StoriesPatricia Smith, 71, a resident of Grundy Hall, a government-subsidized senior housing complex in Doylestown, has medical issues that limit her mobility, making it difficult for her to remain independent. Smith contacted local State Senator Charles McIlhinney’s office to see if he could assist her in getting a lift chair that would make it easier for her to get up and out of her chair more frequently. McIlhinney, in turn, contacted Twilight Wish Foundation, submitting a wish application on behalf of Smith.
Coincidentally, a local woman, Susan Adams, had contacted Twilight Wish the same day wishing to donate a barely used lift chair. Adams had been diagnosed with CIPD, an ailment that left her almost completely paralyzed and bedridden. Luckily, her treatment at the University of Pennsylvania was successful and she is back on her feet, leaving her with an unused lift chair. Adams’ daughter, TaiMarie, searched the internet to find someone who could use the chair and found Twilight Wish. Twilight Wish staff facilitated the wish process in a manner of days, and her simple wish was granted Tuesday, August 23rd at Grundy Hall in Doylestown. Senator McIlhinney attended the wish granting, along with donor, Susan Adams, and representatives from Twilight Wish Foundation.
“I love everything and can’t begin to tell you how much,” said Smith. “It’s so comfortable, it’s like I am living in heaven. I am finally at peace and at rest.”
Adams was also overwhelmed by Smith’s gratitude and the circumstances of the wish granting. “It was such a blessing to be part of this,” Adams said. “Just to see her sitting in her chair, is beyond words.”
The Gift of Vision
/in Top StoriesThe Western Pennsylvania chapter of Twilight Wish Foundation recently granted the wish of Jane Banks, 74, of Pittsburgh. Banks had been gradually losing her vision and was unable to do many daily tasks independently. Her daughter submitted the wish application on her behalf requesting a scan reading device for her mother. Although the cost of a scan read machine typically costs over $3,000, it would allow Banks to read mail, pay bills and remain independent in her own home. Twilight Wish volunteers worked with Freedom Scientific to arrange for an 18-inch LCD machine at a reduced cost for Banks. This device, known as a TOPAZ, was delivered to Banks’ home by Twilight Wish volunteer, Christina Luna. According to Banks’ daughter, Pamela Gage, “Mom absolutely loves her new CCTV and has been using it every day. It has made an astounding difference in her life. Thanks so much!”

Elderly Levittown Woman Has Twilight Wish for New Dentures Granted
/in Top StoriesTwilight Wish Director of Community Relations, Mary Farrell, presents Regina with her wish certificate.Regina Snyder, an elderly Levittown resident, had her Twilight Wish for new dentures granted, thanks to local nonprofit Twilight Wish Foundation and the generosity of a anonymous Doylestown dentist. Representatives from Twilight Wish presented Snyder with a Twilight Wish certificate in her honor at her last dental appointment on Thursday, March 31, 2011.
Snyder, 82, badly needed new dentures; her lower dentures had not been replaced since 1964 and were loose, affecting her ability to chew and eat certain foods. A resident of low-income senior housing, Snyder could not afford them on her own. Snyder worked throughout her life as a teacher’s aide and grocery store cashier and took care of her husband until his death from cancer. She was forced to retire from her cashier job after a car accident in which she sustained a severe back injury. Because of her age she was not a candidate for surgery and is now in chronic pain and unable to stand for any significant length of time, requiring her to use a walker.
Snyder also volunteered throughout her life in Bristol, serving as manager of the Bristol Township 9-12 year-old girls’ softball team for nine years. After moving into her senior housing center, Snyder served terms as Resident Council treasurer, secretary, vice-president, and president over a 15 year period. Snyder also organized transportation for shopping trips and events for the residents of her facility. Thanks to a generous Doylestown dentist, Snyder’s wish has been granted and she has a beautiful smile again!
JROTC Cadets Honored by Philadelphia Eagles, Teva Pharmaceuticals and Twilight Wish
/in Top StoriesJunior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) cadets from South Philadelphia High School were honored for their fundraising efforts during an assembly attended by second quarter honor roll students, members of the Philadelphia Eagles, and representatives from Teva Pharmaceuticals and Twilight Wish Foundation on Tuesday, March 8, 2011.
Last fall, over 700 JROTC cadets from high schools throughout Philadelphia held fundraisers and worked hard to raise money to grant the wishes for 120 veterans of the Coatesville VA Medical Center on November 9, 2010. The high schools included South Philadelphia, Roxborough, Strawberry Mansion, Philadelphia Military Academy at Leeds, Elverson, Frankford, Martin Luther King, Bartrum, Overbrook, and Benjamin Franklin. The cadets from South Philadelphia High School raised the most money, totaling $900. Teva Pharmaceuticals, through a collaboration with the Philadelphia Eagles, donated funds to help grant the wishes and also matched the total amount raised by the cadets. As part of that collaboration, former Eagles great, Jeremiah Trotter and several Eagles cheerleaders surprised the students during an assembly and honored them for their hard work.
Cass Forkin, executive director of Twilight Wish, presented the cadets with the first Intergenerational Twilight Wish Award for their efforts in making wishes come true for deserving senior citizens. Keith Lomax, Battalion Commander for South Philadelphia High School, accepted the award on the cadets’ behalf.
Elderly Woman Has Wish for Motorized Wheelchair Granted
/in Top StoriesTwilight Wish regional director James Ciervo presents Gerrie Westerberg with her Twilight Wish certificate.Geraldine “Gerrie” Westerberg, 83, recently had her wish for a motorized wheelchair to replace her broken one granted, thanks to Twilight Wish Foundation. James Ciervo, the Long Island/New York regional chapter director for Twilight Wish presented Westerberg with her gently used motorized wheelchair and a certificate honoring her at her nursing facility on December 29, 2010. Special thanks to Edward Ciervo and All County Ambulette for their assistance in transporting the wheelchair from Long Island to Latham, New York.
An only child who never married, Westerberg worked in the insurance industry her whole life and took care of her sick parents until they passed away in 2003. Disabled at the age of 50, she was unable to live on her own after they passed away and moved to a nursing facility run by the Little Sisters of the Poor in Latham, New York. Westerberg relied on a donated wheelchair to remain somewhat independent, participating in social activities, volunteering and partaking in daily prayers with the sisters. Unfortunately, her old wheelchair was unreliable and often broke down, leaving Westerberg dependent on staff to take her to activities, meals, and prayers. Her “new” wheelchair will allow her to maintain her independence and dignity. Gerrie’s wish was profiled on News Channel 13 in Albany.
This is the fifth wish granted to date by the New Y ork chapter under the direction of Ciervo. Twilight Wish would not be able to grant wishes without volunteers, corporate and community involvement and donations. If you are interested in becoming a part of Twilight Wish Foundation, please call James Ciervo at 631-569-2025 or email him at LINY@TwilightWish.org
