104-year-old has wish to pet a penguin granted

Bertha Komor, a resident of Village Gate of Farmington, had her wish to pet a penguin granted, thanks to our Central Connecticut chapter. Komor, who will turn 105 in December, has been a resident of Village Gate at Farmington for several years. Her husband passed away after 72 years of marriage together. When Komor was younger and more mobile, she helped with activities and other residents in the facility. Komor is well known throughout Village Gate for being caring and kind to everyone she meets. When asked why she wants to pet a penguin, she replied “because they are adorable and my favorite animal!” Thank you to Mystic Aquarium for helping to grant this very special wish!

Charles and friends go to Phillies game!

Charles Olsen, a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, had his wish to go to one more Phillies game, thanks to Twilight Wish Foundation. Olsen, 75, is battling cancer and his prognosis isn’t good. Thanks to a generous donor, Olsen, his social worker and four friends enjoyed great seats at a recent game.

St. Joseph Living Center residents enjoy spring fashion show

The senior residents of St. Joseph Living Center enjoyed a spring fashion show courtesy of our Central Connecticut chapter. A dozen of the residents there walked the runway showing off new spring fashions including sweaters, dresses, scarves, hats, and sunglasses. Because this event coincides with National Skilled Nursing Care Week, several staff members also participated in the fashion show. A special guest escorted the models down the runway. Following the fashion show, all the residents were treated to a party with refreshments and goodie bags for all. In addition, there was a raffle for staff members to have the chance to win a “thank you” basket to thank them for their hard work and dedication to the seniors there.

Sisters of Charity enjoy a spring fling celebration

The senior residents of the Sisters of Charity enjoyed a “Spring Fling Celebration,” thanks to our Central Connecticut chapter. These retired sisters have dedicated their lives to serving others as nurses and teachers and have all lived a life of poverty. The sisters enjoyed a nostalgic singalong led by one of the nuns there. Following the singalong, the sisters did a service project, putting together 100 “surprise packages” for the Saint Vincent De Paul Place soup kitchen in Norwich. Refreshments were shared by all followed by a flower making craft project to beautify the sisters’ living space. In addition, they each received a gift bag with a prayer box, an olive wood pocket cross, a lap blanket, and candy. Finally, there was a photo booth where the sisters were able to take a “selfie with Pope Francis!” The photos were printed out and given to the sisters in a special Pope Francis frame.

Petting zoo comes to local nursing home

The residents of Garden Spring Nursing & Rehabilitation Center received a visit from the Quiver Traveling Farm on May 11^th, thanks to Twilight Wish Foundation. Among the animals that visited that day were a calf, sheep, goats, a pig, a turkey, ducks, rabbits, chicks, and guinea pigs. It was a fun day for the residents who were able to pet and feed the animals.

Ruth gets the chance to spend time with cats

Ruth Behary, 86, a resident of Hempfield Manor in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, had her wish to visit with cats granted, thanks to our Westmoreland County chapter. Behary lives in a nursing facility and, because of COVID, has been very isolated and lonely. She had cats her whole life to keep her company and still misses them dearly. Behary keeps their photos on her windowsill and speaks of them often. The Westmoreland County chapter arranged for Behary to visit The Caffeinated Cat Café in Greensburg which opened just for her so she can spend some quality time out of the facility with her favorite animals! In addition, the Westmoreland County chapter gave her an interactive stuffed cat to keep her company in the nursing facility. A huge thank you to the Caffeinated Cat Café for making this wish so special!

Uptown String Band Performs at Neshaminy Manor

Residents of Neshaminy Manor in Warrington were treated to a surprise performance by the Uptown String Band, Bucks County’s only Mummers organization, on Monday, May 9, 2022, thanks to local nonprofit Twilight Wish Foundation. The seniors, who were decked out in Mardi Gras beads, thoroughly enjoyed the performance and were dancing in their seats!

Brenda’s wish to get her hair done is granted

Brenda Prince, a resident of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, had her wish to get her hair done and then travel to Virginia to see family with her sister and friend granted, thanks to our Allegheny County chapter. As part of her wish, she wants to pay for the first tank of gas and take them out to lunch while they are in Virginia. Prince, 71, is often the beneficiary of the generosity of her sister and friend. Because she lives on a fixed income, she could not afford to reciprocate. Prince has always been very involved in her community, teaching Sunday School at Liberty Baptist Church for over 35 years. In addition, she is a former respite care worker. Volunteers from the Allegheny County chapter presented Prince with her wish certificate and gift cards at her hair appointment on April 26, 2022.

Joyce’s wish for gift cards so she can go shopping is granted

Joyce Mickens, a resident of Philadelphia, had her simple wish for new clothing and shoes granted, thanks to Twilight Wish Foundation. Mickens, 65, lives on her own in low-income senior housing. Most of her monthly income goes to bills and food with little left for any extras. Mickens volunteers every week to deliver lunch to other housebound residents at the Sam Tabas Apartments where she lives. Having her wish granted will boost her self-confidence and improve her quality of life. Staff from Twilight Wish delivered several gift cards to Mickens so that she can enjoy a shopping spree!

Doris’s wish for bedroom furniture is granted

Doris Matos, a resident of Immanuel House in Hartford, had her wish for two bedroom dressers granted, thanks to the Connecticut chapter of national nonprofit Twilight Wish Foundation. Matos, 65, recently moved to Immanuel House. She is widowed, lives on her own and has very little furniture. Matos’ wish is for two bedroom dressers to store her clothes. This simple wish was the first wish granted by the Connecticut chapter.
