Lois receives the gift of hearing

Lois George, 98, a resident of Philadelphia, PA, recently had her wish for hearing aids granted, thanks to Twilight Wish. George is very independent and still lives on her own, but needed hearing aids. Living on a fixed income, she could not afford them herself. Her social worker nominated her and wrote “her independence is of great value to her and these hearing aids would allow her to continue living on her own and independently.” Previously, George volunteered her time as a member of the Ladies Aid Society at Penn Presbyterian Hospital, operating the gift shop there. She was also very involved in the Quaker Friends school where she worked as a receptionist. Thank you to Beltone Hearing for granting her wish!

JoAnn’s wish is granted

Bucks County nonprofits Twilight Wish Foundation and Between Friends Outreach partnered to grant the wishes of two Perkasie seniors in need. JoAnn Suttle, 73, and Pauline Harris, 79, are neighbors who both have several diseased elm trees on their properties that could fall at any moment, which would destroy their homes at the least, according to a tree specialist. Both women are widowed and live on fixed incomes. They have exhausted all other options to get the trees removed so turned to Twilight Wish for assistance. Original estimates were more than $4,000 per property so Twilight Wish staff reached out to Between Friends Outreach to see if they had resources that could help. Tara Stoop, executive director of Between Friends Outreach, contacted local tree service, Greenleaf Tree Service, who donated their services to remove the trees. Twilight Wish Foundation will be covering the cost of the crane rental to remove the diseased trees.

Juanita’s wish to have her beloved fountain restored is granted

Juanita Helmuth, a resident of Erie, Pennsylvania, had her wish to have the large fountain in her yard restored to working order granted, thanks to Twilight Wish Foundation. Helmuth, 86, has lived in her home for over 60 years. Her late husband built the fountain for her in their backyard years ago and they enjoyed it every summer. Sadly, the fountain has fallen into disrepair and is not in working condition. Helmuth is now in hospice because of end stage heart failure and her wish is to have it repaired and working before she passes. She often sits looking into the backyard and having the foundation working will bring her peace at this time in her life. Thanks to Chuck Howard of Howards Four Season Works for donating his time to complete this special wish.

Bill’s wish for hearing aids is granted

William Dovalovsky, a resident of Monongahela, Pennsylvania, had his wish for hearing aids granted, thanks to Twilight Wish Foundation and Beltone in Washington, PA. Dovalovsky, 71, has muscular dystrophy and lives alone. Both of his hearing aids are broken and his glasses are over five years old. Because he lives on a fixed income, he can’t afford to replace either on his own. Having both replaced will greatly improve his quality of life. Dovalovsky received his hearing aids on Thursday, July 1^st.

Simple needs wishes granted to nursing home residents

The 88 residents of Greenleaf Nursing and Convalescent home in Doylestown had their simple needs wishes granted, thanks to Twilight Wish Foundation. The wishes granted included requests for stuffed animals, a birdhouse for a window, office supplies and a new belt. These wishes were granted thanks to generous donors who purchased items from a wish list and to funding received from the Tuesdays with Lori Legacy Program.

Della’s wish for comfort is granted

Della Arrington, 92, a resident of Vernon, PA, had her wish for heated massage mat and back support pillow granted by our Allegheny County chapter on December 13, 2020. Della was confined to either her bed or a chair because of her health issues and both items would give her comfort and pain relief. According to her nurse who nominated her for the wish, Della’s favorite thing about having her wish granted was her Twilight Wish certificate. She kept it on the dining room table and would look at it throughout the day, pick it up, read it and smile, saying “I can’t believe that someone thinks I’m special.” Della used the massage mat and back support pillow every day to keep warm and comfortable. Della had lost her husband earlier in the year to COVID and was not well herself. Sadly, she passed away in late January 2021, but did so knowing she was loved and appreciated.

Jerry Blavat entertains residents of Luther Woods!

Legendary Philadelphia disc jockey, Jerry Blavat, the “Geator with the Heater,” paid a visit to the residents of Luther Woods Nursing & Rehabilitation in Hatboro on Sunday, March 8, 2020, thanks to Twilight Wish Foundation. Blavat emceed a fun 50s and 60s- themed sock hop for the residents there who had no idea he’d be hosting their event. Although the majority of the residents are wheelchair bound, Blavat managed to get them singing, tapping their feet and clapping their hands to the familiar tunes of their youth. This wish was made possible by a generous donation from Carol and Jack Lieberman.

Vera’s wish for a new heater is granted

Vera Puterbaugh, a resident of Quakertown, Pennsylvania, had her wish for a new heater for her home granted, thanks to Twilight Wish and All Seasons Comfort Control. Puterbaugh, 74, lives alone in a mobile home. Her heater no longer works and needs to be replaced, but she cannot afford to pay for it on her own. She had been using a space heater to heat her home which is unsafe. Thanks to All Seasons Comfort Control who donated the labor and installed the heater on February 4^th, her wish was granted. Dorothy’s beautiful new smile

Dorothy Delia, 86, a resident of West Babylon, NY, recently had her wish for dental work granted, thanks to our Long Island chapter. Delia needed dental work done badly. She hadn’t been able to afford to go to the dentist since she retired and lost her dental insurance. She had begun to lose her teeth and could only eat soft foods. Delia worked and volunteered for the Salvation Army for over 20 years. She also did intake after 9-11 and is very involved in her church. Thanks to a generous donor, her wish for dental work was granted!

Al’s wish to return to the Roundhouse is granted

Al Vasso, a resident of Luther Woods in Hatboro, Pennsylvania, had his wish to visit the Roundhouse one more time granted on May 17, 2019. Al, 82, worked as both a policeman and as a plain clothes detective for the Philadelphia Police Department for many years, working in the District Attorney’s office for some time. While serving an arrest warrant in a taproom, he walked into an armed robbery in progress and was shot twice. Al has received many commendations throughout his career and had the opportunity to work alongside Arlen Specter and Frank Rizzo. To make his day even more special, Al and his family were driven in a Philadelphia police vehicle from his nursing home to the Roundhouse with a police escort. He was welcomed with an honor guard and the Philadelphia Police & Fire Pipes & Drum. The Police Department pulled his old badge number and presented him with a hat with his badge number. Al and his family were given a tour of the building ending with a press conference where he met Commissioner Richard Ross, Jr. and spoke with the media. He was also given photos and mementos of his long career in the police department. Al was then given a tour of both the SWAT and K9 headquarters before enjoying a special lunch at the FOP and a visit to the Police Museum that is housed in the old police academy that he attended. A huge thank you to the Philadelphia Police Department for literally rolling out the “blue carpet” and giving Al a day he will never forget!
