/in Fulfilled Wishes/by Mary FarrellPatricia Archibeque, 82, a resident of Barstow, California recently had her wish for new skirting for her mobile home granted, thanks to our Barstow chapter. Patricia lives alone in a mobile home and the skirting around the bottom of the trailer was crumbling. The skirting is needed to keep debris and small animals from getting under her home, but Patricia couldn’t afford it on her fixed income. Thanks to our Barstow chapter, her wish was granted in late May 2017.
Guilana B., 66, Barstow. CA
/in Fulfilled Wishes/by Mary FarrellGuilana Bender, 66, a resident of Barstow, California, recently had her wish to visit her dying brother one more time granted by our Barstow, CA chapter. Guilana’s brother was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in February and only given a few months to live. She wished to visit him one more time, but couldn’t afford it on her own. Thanks to our Barstow chapter, her poignant wish was granted in late May.
Catherine G., 66, Clark, NJ
/in Fulfilled Wishes/by Mary FarrellCatherine Green, 66, a resident of Clark Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Clark, New Jersey, had her wish to visit the Bronx Zoo granted, thanks to Our New Jersey chapter. Catherine’s passion is spending time with horses and other animals. As a teenager, she worked with and rode horses. One of her favorite things to do now is drawing animals from photographs. Catherine was nominated by the administrator of her facility, Gary Santo who wrote that she is a very special resident who is kind and loving to all who meet her. Before moving into the facility, Catherine was very involved in her church, Holy Trinity, and worked in the rectory there. Her wish came true on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 when she visited the Bronx Zoo with her former neighbor and volunteer at her facility, Joan Brennan.
Lizzie R., 88, Horsham, PA
/in Fulfilled Wishes/by Mary FarrellElizabeth “Lizzie” Rocco had her wish to paint part of a mural granted on Tuesday, May 16th. Since moving to Luther Woods Nursing Home last September, Lizzie has come out of her shell and become very involved in all the art programs and classes there. She is a talented artist who loves to paint and enjoys helping others in the classes with their projects. Her wish to help paint on a mural came true as part of our inaugural Week of Wishes, a national wish granting event. Lizzie helped paint a mural on canvas at Mural Arts Philadelphia and then it was off to South Philly where she enjoyed a cheesesteak at Pat’s Steaks with her son and daughter. This wish was made possible thanks to a generous donation from Optum of Horsham. Special thanks also to Mural Arts Philadelphia and Pat’s King of Steaks for making this wish so special.
Theresia B., 105, Oakdale, PA
/in Fulfilled Wishes/by Mary FarrellTheresia Brandl, 105, a resident of Oakdale, Pennsylvania, had her lifelong wish to finally receive her high school diploma granted, thanks to our Allegheny County chapter. Theresia has always regretted that she never graduated from high school. She attended Stowe Township High School, but left before she graduated in order to help take care of her family. Theresia received her diploma during a wonderful graduation celebration in her nursing facility complete with cap and gown on Wednesday, May 17th. Sadly, Theresia passed away one week after her wish was granted. According to her family, though, she passed away knowing that her final wish was granted.
Beatrice M., 93, Erie, PA
/in Fulfilled Wishes/by Mary FarrellBeatrice Miller, a resident of Erie, had her wish to visit the graves of her son and daughter and put daffodils on them granted, thanks to our Erie, PA chapter. Beatrice, 93, does not leave her apartment much so being able to get out for the day and visit her children’s graves meant so much to her. As part of her wish, Beatrice also enjoyed a drive and then lunch at a Chinese restaurant, a big treat for her. She is very deserving and worked as a secretary for Henderson United Methodist church for 11 years. Her wish was granted as part of our “Week of Wishes,” a national wish granting event.
Sandra P., Washington, PA
/in Fulfilled Wishes/by Mary FarrellOur Washington County, PA chapter recently granted Sandra’s simple wish for a new outfit and dinner at Red Lobster. In addition to going shopping at Kohl’s for new clothing, they surprised Sandra with a makeover before taking her to a special dinner at Red Lobster. Sandra lives in a nursing facility and is very grateful for the smallest kindnesses. Her wish was granted on Monday, May 15th during Week of Wishes.
Albert T., 65, Reno, NV
/in Fulfilled Wishes/by Mary FarrellThanks to the generous students of the University of Nevada at Reno, we were able to grant Albert Thompson’s simple wish for a bed. Albert hasn’t had a bed since he moved from Chicago to Reno in 2015. He is currently a deacon in his church and involved with the church food distribution and senior club programs. Albert is also currently finishing an employment training program and is seeking placement. His wish was granted on May 12th when he received a king size bed and bedding.
Ward M., Scottdale, PA
/in Fulfilled Wishes/by Mary FarrellWard Miller’s simple wish for a new lift chair was recently granted by our Westmoreland County chapter during our first annual Week of Wishes. Ward broke his right leg last November and worked hard to be released from a rehab center and able walk again with a walker. His lift chair at home no longer works and, without it, Ward can only sit on a kitchen chair or on his bed. Receiving his new lift chair will allow Ward to maintain his independence.
David G., 69, Springfield, TN
/in Fulfilled Wishes/by Mary FarrellVietnam Veteran David Guevara, 69, a resident of Springfield, Tennessee, had his wish to reunite with his seven siblings who live in La Feria, Texas granted recently. David and his wife, Mary, traveled from their home in Tennessee to La Feria in April to spend Easter with his family. The Guevaras have not been able to afford the cost to travel to Texas since he retired in 2008. They are both pastors who have operated a community service ministry that targets low-income families for over 30 years. In addition, they also started a food pantry in their church. Thanks to the generosity of many donors, his wish came true.
