She wanted to experience the thrill of the open road and be a part of the truck driving world. Twilight Wish arranged for Margarette to ride shotgun with truck driver, Annabella Wood, in an 18-wheeler across the country. This wish, which was three years in the making, began with a kick-off party before they left Dublin, Pennsylvania on their two-week journey. The planned route took them cross-country to California and then down to Florida to drop Margarette off at her home in Merritt Island, Florida. All told, the trip took them through 17 states, logging over 6,500 miles during their 16-day adventure.

Thanks to the kindness and generosity of Audiology Research Associates in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Betty’s wish was granted by the Pacific Northwest Chapter on January 28, 2011. Betty cares for her daughter, 67, who has Parkinson’s Disease, and son-in-law, 76, who has suffered two strokes. Betty still drives and does all the cooking and shopping for the family despite suffering with diabetes and breaking a hip a year ago. She is very grateful for her new hearing aids which now enable her to avoid family miscommunications.

Her daughter wrote to Twilight Wish asking for a new quilt because Eldorado “needs the comforts of home.” Thanks to master quilter, Paula Munkachy, Eldorado received a new hand stitched, full size quilt on 9/16/10.

She has hosted youth camping retreats, family reunions and community picnics. Since her husband’s death in 2008, she has relied on her golf cart to maintain the large property and remain living independently in her home. She uses the golf cart to haul firewood from the forest, feed her horses in the winter and bring vegetables back from the garden.

Ewald served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during World War II and was stationed overseas for 45 months. Ewald dreams of having a nice, private dinner out with his wife. He has not had a special dinner with his wife since they moved to the nursing home.
Thanks to Ricardo’s restaurant and our generous donors, Ewald and his wife enjoyed a romantic dinner on March 1, 2011. Ewald was able to present his wife with a dozen roses. Ewald’s wish was the 1569th wish granted by Twilight Wish and our Erie Chapter’s 1st!
