Doris, a resident of Spring Arbor of Raleigh Residential Assisted Living, suffers from multiple sclerosis (MS). Prior to being diagnosed with MS, this mother of two and grandmother of four worked as a teller for a local bank. Doris is an integral part of the Spring Arbor community and is well known for her infectious smile, positive attitude and colorful outfits! Her wish was to get her hair and nails done, get dressed up and ride in a limo to a birthday dinner with friends at her favorite restaurant. Thanks to several generous donors, her wish was granted on her birthday, Friday, December 12, 2014, when she and her friends traveled via limo to Red Lobster where they enjoyed a delicious dinner together.

Tom Ford, chapter director of the New Castle, PA chapter of Twilight Wish, presented her wish an autographed football, game tickets and a wish certificate at her facility on Tuesday, November 25th. Helen is a faithful, lifelong Steelers fan, but had never had the chance to go to a game in person. She was an LPN for years at Allegheny General Hospital, retiring twice but returning back each time, until she retired for the third and final time. According to her daughter, Patricia is a very caring person who always puts others first. Patricia has never had any new furniture, she was always content with other’s cast-offs. Florence F., 84, Quakertown, PA

Florence suffers from arthritis in her shoulder and back and also had a knee replacement. She wished for a new lift chair to replace her 12-year-old one that no longer works. The new lift chair will alleviate the pain she feels using a regular chair and will also give her stability and help her avoid falling. Her simple wish was granted thanks to funding received from The Kistler-Tiffany Foundation. She has severe arthritis in her lower back and knees and wished for a reclining lift chair to alleviate some of her pain and allow her to remain independent. Teresa was the primary caregiver for her mother and then her husband until they passed away. She now lives in a nursing home and is confined to a wheelchair. She does not get the opportunity to go outside of her facility and wishes to spend the day shopping and having lunch with her sister. Due to her limited means, she does not have the extra money for clothes and would like a few new things for her room.

/in Fulfilled Wishes/by Mary FarrellHank Goehring, 80, and his wife, Loretta, lived in the small town of Kimmswick, Missouri, for over 14 years and were very involved in the community there. Now, with them getting on in years and being unable to live on their own, they live together in the Marymount Senior Living Community in Eureka. Goehring’s simple, poignant wish is to return for the day to their beloved town of Kimmswick and revisit some of their favorite places including City Hall where Goehring used to work as an Alderman. In addition to serving as an Alderman, Goehring was a police officer for over 30 years, both in St. Louis and in Kimmswick where he was Chief of Police. In addition, he is an Army and Marine Corp Reserve veteran and ran the museum at Jefferson Barracks Historic Park for ten years. Besides City Hall, the Goehring’s drove past the Anheuser Estate, their own family home, and then had lunch at one of their favorite restaurants, The Dough Depot. Caldwell, 69, has been a resident of Grundy Manor, a low-income housing facility for seniors for the past four years. According to her nominator, Mary Haesemeyer, her case manager, Caldwell is always helping other residents in the building and served on the Grundy Manor council for three years. In addition, Caldwell has worked for over 15 years as a caregiver for older adults. She has been without dentures for over two years, but couldn’t afford to get a new set because of her limited income. Arp, a retired home health aide, is a resident of Grundy Manor, a low-income senior housing facility. According to her case manager, Arp is selfless and always puts others first. In fact, for several years now, she has provided care to a developmentally disabled resident, cooking and cleaning for him and accompanying him to doctor appointments, expecting nothing in return. Because she lives on a fixed income, she could not afford this special dinner on her own and was so grateful that her wish was granted. Virginia, 87, Santa Cruz, CA
/in Fulfilled Wishes/by Mary FarrellVirginia Kirby, a resident of Santa Cruz, CA recently had her poignant wish to visit her family’s gravesites in Los Angeles granted by our Southern California chapter. Kirby has not been able to visit their graves in years because of the cost and distance. At the age of 87, this wish is very meaningful and important to her. Kirby has been very involved in her community throughout her life. Even now, she is an active member of three senior centers in Santa Cruz and works as a volunteer for both the Democratic Women’s Club of Santa Cruz County and the Symphony League of Santa Cruz County.
